Digitalisation Demystified

Momentum is building in the adoption of digital technologies by the shipping industry. But as the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) widen the range and sophistication of their offerings, how do shipowners and managers identify the solutions best suited to the needs of their fleets?

This session will seek to demystify the digitalisation process, identifying its potential benefits as an enabler of sustainable and optimised performance, and considering the steps needed to ensure a return on investment.

The session will explore

  • How digital technologies can achieve exceptional results in performance monitoring, navigation, risk management, fleet operations and crewing
  • The challenges of smart technology adoption and retrofitting
  • Satellite technology and the connectivity revolution for shipping
  • Data usage and standardisation
  • Digitalisation as an enabler of regulatory compliance
  • The next phase of smart technology development from the OMEs
  • A timeline for the development of smart vessels

All Hands on Deck: Shaping the Future of Seafaring

Part One: A New dispensation for seafarers?

If the shipping industry is to succeed in meeting the challenges it faces in the years ahead, commercial re-alignment, de-carbonisation and digitalisation, its seagoing workforce will play a crucial role in making this happen.

Recent experience, including the pandemic, has had a sometimes devastating effect on seafarer welfare and morale, highlighting structural problems such as crew change. How can, and how should, the industry and wider society respond, so that world’s seafarers are afforded the conditions and, just as important, the status they deserve as essential workers in a vital global industry?

What will the introduction of digital technologies and the gradual adoption of automation mean for the role and responsibilities of seafarers?

Part Two: A Better Life at Sea

What are the cutting edge ideas now being deployed to support seafarers and improve their physical and psychological well-being? What new technology can do to improve their conditions, from communication with home to efficient remuneration systems and travel? Can more be done by port authorities on seafarers’ welfare?

The shipping industry will need a well motivated workforce to perform its role in the global economy. As it competes to recruit the next generation of seafarers, and to ensure that it retains its existing workforce, what is the vision of the seafaring role and career that will attract the first class talent it needs? What is the role and responsibility of maritime education in achieving this?
